Scan Software Review – Scan To PDF v 4.2 and métier Scan2PDF 14 Professional

I have set out to review various scan software solutions to work in conjunction with BubbleScan OMR .

Specifically, the software needs to meet the following requirements:

1. Scan at 200 dpi, b/w

2. Support duplex/simplex, drop-out-red options

3. Save to PDF or TIF

4. Auto-save and auto-name files

5. Make it easy to select the target folder

6. Allow page limit for multi-page (PDF or TIF) files

Product/Vendor:  Scan To PDF v4.2 Standard Edition

Price: US$ 42.00

Web Site: http://www.scantopdf.com/

1. YES. Communicates with scanner via TWAIN interface which brings up the scanner manufacturer’s interface. I have full access to select all of the scanner’s functionality.

2. YES. See comment to (1)

3. YES. Just as the name says, it automatically saves to PDF. Actually, it defaults to email the scanned PDF. Which is also a nice feature but because there’s no way to limit the number of pages this could be problematic for our BubbleScan environment (where some customers scan 100s and even 1000s of pages).

4. YES  + NO.  ScanToPDF v4.2 can be set up to automatically save, but I have to name each PDF (single or multi-page). I am given the option to append or insert the new PDF into an existing one, but I have to name each PDF separately. Scan To PDF offers plug-ins and one of them is called filenamer. It seems to do exactly what I want, but it has a price tag of $210.

5. SO SO. I had to search a little to find where to change the directory it is saving to. (Just as I had to search a little to select the scanner I was scanning with.) Both options could be more intuitive/visible. But they are there.

6. NO.

screen shot - ScanToPDFv42Overall, a nice utility, but I would not recommend it for use with BubbleScan OMR. While it’s easy to monitor the page count for each PDF simply by how many pages you put into the input tray, having to name each PDF individually makes it unpractical for all but very low volume applications.

3. YES. Just as the name says, it automatically saves to PDF.

4. NO.  metier displays thumbnails of all scanned PDF pages and then let’s me save all those pages. I have to name each PDF (single or multi-page). I am given the option to append the new PDF to an existing one, but I have to name each PDF separately. I do not see an auto-name feature.

5. SO SO. Since I have to save each PDF file manually, the default directory is whatever I selected previously.

6. NO.

screen shot - metier Scan2PDF14Overall, a nice utility. Works well, but not adequate for the BubbleScan OMR environment, where we need more ‘batch’ functionality like auto-naming of files and also automatically saving to a target directory.
